About the Southwark Climate Collective

The Southwark Climate Collective is a partnership project funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and supported by the Mayor of London.

In 2023, Better Bankside, the Business Improvement District for the Bankside area of London, was awarded £653,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund  (UKSPF) to deliver business decarbonisation support to SMEs across the London borough of Southwark.

The 18-month project supported 141 SMEs on their net zero journeys, achieving a range of outcomes, from energy savings and increased recycling rates to improved processes and management practices.

An additional

£252,200

was secured from UKSPF in April 2025, to continue and expand the project.

The Southwark Climate Collective builds off the success of the Mayor of London’s Business Climate Challenge

In 2019 the Business Climate Challenge was launched to 19 Bankside SMEs, supporting businesses to reduce energy consumption and decarbonise their business.

Key results from the Business Climate Challenge:

  • Pilot businesses reduced energy consumption by 16% on average, saving over £8,000 on energy bills and collectively saving 213tCO2e carbon emissions.
  • Most energy savings were achieved through low or no-cost interventions to businesses
  • In 2022, the programme was scaled up with over 200 SMEs across London taking action to improve energy efficiency.
